Starting early in the morning, websites and apps like Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Coinbase, Duolingo, Perplexity AI, and even Amazon’s own Alexa and Prime Video suddenly became inaccessible for millions of users.
Root Cause and Recovery Efforts
AWS engineers quickly pinpointed the main issue: a DNS resolution failure with the DynamoDB API endpoint in the US-EAST-1 region. DynamoDB is a database service relied upon by countless applications to store and retrieve data in real time. When it faltered, the impact rippled outwards, disrupting everything from smart devices to online banking platforms.
AWS released an official statement confirming the root cause and detailing their efforts to restore service: “Based on our investigation, the issue appears to be related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1.
